Happy Independence to the U.S.A.

The Fourth of July is one of those holidays that leaves Manhattan feeling comparatively peaceful. Everyone scampers off to the Hamptons, the Jersey Shore (GTL baby) or somewhere remote and far from the steam heat of the city.

For those staycationing in celebration of America's independence, there will still be plenty to do locally.

Here are three festive ideas for enjoying the sizzling summer weather right here in the concrete jungle:
  • Governor's Island -- Pack a picnic lunch, hop the ferry and enjoy some much-needed green space. Check here for information on concerts and events on the Island this weekend.
  • Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest -- The annual competitive chowdown, held on Coney Island, attracts a colorful crowd. If you're already planning a day at Brooklyn's famed beach, stop by to witness some of America's best competitive eaters in action.
  • Hudson River Fireworks -- The 4th is just not the same without a good fireworks display. This year, Macy's will set off 40,000 sparklers over the Hudson River. Arrive early to get some highway with a view. Access to the highway gets blocked off about an hour before the 9:20 PM send up.
