Hanging Out on the Island

Sometimes you just want to get away from it all -- the chaos, the pungent smells, the hot and sweaty crowds -- all the things we've grown to love about life in New York but would gladly thrust aside for a day of peace and quiet.

Going to the Hamptons isn't for everyone, and let's face it, it's not exactly convenient. So what to do to enjoy a bit of clean green and relaxation?

Hop on over to Governor's Island this weekend. The free ferry departs every half hour from 10 South Street, Slip 7.

Governor's Island has a rich military history but was transformed into a preservation and transferred over to the people of New York in 2003. Every spring/summer weekend boasts free entertainment -- music, activities, film festivals, book readings, etc.

Pack a picnic, a good book, a frisbee, and some friends you don't mind being stranded on an island with for the day.
